High Heels at Ancient Sites
At ancient Greek sites, the wrong shoes can become a preservation problem. Reports have long noted that high heels were restricted at parts of the Acropolis area because sharp heels can damage old stone surfaces. The idea sounds oddly specific, but ancient marble and stone are not ordinary pavement. Every step matters when millions of visitors pass through historic places each year. A stylish tourist may think the shoes only affect comfort, but the site staff may see something different: tiny repeated scratches on priceless heritage. Sometimes the rule is not about fashion at all. It is about protecting history.
